The US Block on Anthropic's Strongest Models Held Through Monday's Talks

A week-old US block on Anthropic's two most powerful models is still in force after high-level talks in Washington, and neither side has set a date for resolving it.

This rests on Wired's report of Monday's meeting, citing three people briefed on it, and on Anthropic's public position. Contested points stay attributed to the side making them.

What happened

Monday's talks between the Trump administration and Anthropic ended without lifting the export controls placed last week on Anthropic's most advanced AI models. Those restrictions, brought in over concerns the models could be misused, stay exactly as they were. Both sides met at the Commerce Department and finished with no resolution and no clear next step.

The disagreement

It comes down to one technical question. Government officials believe the safety limits on Claude Fable 5 can be stripped away to reach the more powerful abilities of the model underneath, called Mythos. The National Security Agency treats that as a real risk. Anthropic says it studied the concern and finds it overstated. Both sides held their ground, so the block stayed on.

Who was in the room

Anthropic treated this as serious. It sent its cofounder Tom Brown and external affairs head Sarah Heck to lead, and flew in two of its top security researchers. On the government side, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick joined by phone from the G7 summit in France, and the administration's cyber director sat the meeting out. Flying your most senior security people across the country is not what a company does over a small disagreement.

If you run on these models

If your work depends on Fable 5 or Mythos, nothing has changed since last week. You still can't use them, you still need a replacement, and there's no date yet for when access comes back. The people who would know couldn't give one. If you use any other Anthropic model, or a model from another company, this doesn't affect you.

What to do now

If you were relying on either of the two blocked models, start working on a replacement this week instead of waiting. There's no clear end to the wait. If you weren't relying on them, you have less to do. Just make sure you know which model your business actually runs on, and have a backup you could switch to if it stopped working tomorrow.
